What a wonderful comparison! Having acted in plays a few times I can readily see the relationship between a director and a novelist.

I am a novice writer. I have purchased and started to read several books on how to write, the result of which was freezing up and not being able to write at all. So far, your approach appears different enough so that might not happen.

I was directed here by Jennifer Blanchard who blogged about your blog at Procrastinating Writers.

I'm amazed your posts aren't overflowing with comments; your posts are full of usable information set out in an easy to read and understand style.

I'm off to read until I catch up with the latest post.

Hi Larry - got to your blog via Leo and I've been reading it on and off all day. This post has finally convinced me about outlining. I get it now: the outline is like the script (and I hate outlines because they seem so soul-less) while the actual writing of the novel is the directing. That's the fun part. Thanks so much for putting a whole new spin on the process.

I've never written this in a comment before, but Hallelujah!!

Send this post everywhere, please. It'll change lives. I know you and I meet in the common ground of musicality, but this is an exquisite expression of what I've ben trying to encourage folk to explore for months now: "Like film directors, we command tonality." This is why I'll never make it as a screenwriter. I have directoritis. I hear the soundtrack; I want to describe the panning in of the camera, the nuances I expect from the actors who breathe life into characters. I always cast the damn things in my head too!

This one is bookmarked for re-reading. Thank you. (Can't understand why it doesn't have a rack of comments.)

PS Every comment seems to provoke one - forgive me! Please consider a Tweet This or Share This plugin. This post is tweetworthy. I'll retweet it for you after I go make second breakfast for my Hobbit child.
